The distinction between American automobiles and foreign automobiles is not what it used to be. Traditionally there were companies that only operated in the United States and they’d compete with other manufacturers worldwide. It was a matter of American pride to own an American automobile, which was made in a factory on American land and built by American employees.
Now, the companies that used to only operate in the US have foreign factories, as well as US factories. Also, companies that were traditionally foreign now have factories in the USA, and therefore make “American” automobiles and even employ American workers. Although the extent to which those automobiles are manufactured in the US varies since parts can be manufactured overseas and then the vehicle is assembled here. CarAndDriver.com has curated a list of automobiles where at least 50% of the parts and overall production occurs in the US.
For example, Ford Motor Company, which is traditionally an American company, has factories in Thailand, France, Germany, South Africa, Russia, and so on. Toyota which is traditionally a Japanese auto manufacturer also has factories worldwide, as well as here in the USA. In the 1990s Dodge made a surge in the auto market by coming out with a new, yet classy design for their trucks – the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram. Dodge was originally owned by Chrysler, an American company. In 2009 Chrysler was acquired by Fiat, which is traditionally an Italian-based auto manufacturer. Yet, they kept many of the American-based factories and operations in place as “Fiat Chrysler”. Indeed, the Dodge Durango is one of the vehicles that CarAndDriver listed as being over 50% manufactured in the USA. Part of the result of Fiat’s acquisition is that there are now two companies named Dodge and RAM Trucks (or just RAM).
One might consider that an automotive manufacturer is American if they are headquartered in the USA, regardless of where they may have factories, but that doesn’t necessarily work either because a sub-company can be headquartered in the USA while their parent company is headquartered in a different country.
