Saturn was a subsidiary of General Motors which was formed in 1982. The subsidiary operated almost independently of GM and had it’s own assembly plant in Tennessee. It was one of the strategies General Motors used to compete with Japanese imports. In 2009 General Motors had to reorganize due to the economic recession that was related to the housing crash in 2008-2010. Saturn was one of the subsidiaries that was discontinued after the division failed to sell to Penske.
