Among technicians and auto professionals the “electrical system” without further clarification always refers to the starter, ignition and recharging systems that are directly related to starting and regulating the engine, or more specifically the combustion cycle within the engine. The general phrase doesn’t technically refer to things like the lane change signals or the radio.

“But wait a minute,” you say, “doesn’t it take electricity to power the dome light, door locks and other electrical components?” Well, yes it does but they are still not part of the “electrical system”, or more accurately they are not part of the “engine electrical system”. However, there is a name for all other these other electrical parts. It’s called the “Chassis Electrical System” because the chassis is the vehicle frame and could refer to everything else surrounding the engine from bumper to bumper.

The Chassis Electrical System

The Chassis Electrical system includes all electric components and circuits of the vehicle that are not part of the engine electrical system. Since the battery powers all electrical parts of the vehicle both the chassis electrical system and engine electrical system include the battery.

Here is a list of components that are part of the Chassis Electrical System:

  • Fuses
  • Dome Light
  • Brake Lights
  • Backup/Reverse Lights
  • Front & Rear Turn Signal Lights
  • Front & Rear Hazard Lights
  • High Beam Lights
  • Additional external lighting around the vehicle
  • Horn
  • All dashboard and steering wheel switches
  • All dashboard warning lights
  • All sensors, switches and relays
  • Power motors, such as the power window motor or ventilation blower motors
  • Power Door Locks
  • Power Windows
  • Car Stereo
  • Windshield wipers
  • Any other electric accessories and their circuits

As modern vehicles advance in technologically they begin to have more and more electric components and circuits. Only a short while ago it wasn’t standard to have a backup camera and GPS display in the dash, but now those are frequently seen in vehicles even below luxury class.

If you are a business owner, then you may have vehicles in your fleet that have electric motors and hydraulics which perform specific functions. Crawford’s Auto can service these parts as part of fleet auto repair services.

Chassis Electrical System Maintenance

There are actually quite a few electric components that are checked during standard maintenance. All the external lighting, dashboard lighting and windshield wipers are checked with every oil change as part of our regular safety check.

At every oil change the battery is visually inspected, the battery fluid level is checked when it’s accessible, and the battery is tested. The quality of the battery depends on how many times it can be discharged and recharged. It is not intended to run electronic accessories of the vehicle for long periods of time without the engine running. If you do this often then in the short term you might have to jump start the vehicle; in the long term it will shorten the life of the battery. Learn more about Battery Services.

When any particular electric component doesn’t work, then the fuses are the first part of the circuit to be checked. Fuses can be checked by removing them and visually inspecting them or by using a fuse test light. Fuses that are burnt out will be replaced. Light bulbs that have burnt out are also replaced. Fuses and bulbs are relatively inexpensive. Learn more about fuses in Lesson 2 of our Beginner’s Guide To Auto Repair & Maintenance online or download our free ebook.

Electric Component Repairs

If an electric component is not working and it has been determined that it is not a burnt fuse or bulb, then further investigation is needed. Sometimes there may be a short in the circuit that is supplying the component with electricity or the component itself is faulty. Depending on where the short is, you could need wire replacement, connector repair, switch repair, or relay repair. If the component itself is faulty then it needs electric component replacement.

Does Crawford’s Auto Repair Do Body Work? (Body Component Repairs)

The phrase “body work” can refer to the body itself or anything within the body. Can Crawford’s Auto Repair fix window lifting and lowering mechanisms, locks, handles, lighting and other parts that are housed in the body or attached on the body? Yes! We can fix almost everything in the body and anything in the dash, which actually gets pretty complex, so we can do “body work”. We don’t replace the windshield or windows, and we don’t install car stereos. If window glass is broken, then it’s best to let the windshield repair shops replace it, but if the window won’t go up and down then we can fix that.

Crawford’s Auto Repair is not an auto body shop. We don’t do body reconditioning, dent repair, paint or repairs after the vehicle has been in an accident. An auto body shop is more suited for these repairs since work on the body can require special equipment. Also an auto body shop is more accustomed to accepting insurance payments for these repairs if the vehicle has been in an accident. So as long as the repair isn’t to body itself (dent or paint) and as long as it’s not an after-accident repair, then yes, we can fix that.

Here is a more complete list of body component repairs:

  • Door latch replacement
  • Door handle replacement
  • Hood latch replacement
  • Hood lift support shocks replacement
  • Lubricate doors
  • Lubricate hood hinge
  • Lubricate trunk

  • Trunk latch release cable replacement
  • Trunk latch replacement
  • Trunk lock inspection
  • Trunk lift support shocks replacement
  • Fallen window repair
  • Tail light lens replacement
  • Door mirror replacement
  • Windshield wiper inspection
  • Windshield washer tube and jets inspection
  • Windshield wiper arm replacement
  • Windshield wiper blade replacement
  • Windshield wiper inspection
  • Wiper gearbox replacement
