Scion is a defunct American division of the Japanese automaker Toyota. It’s a perfect example of the globalization of the auto industry. There used to be a clear distinction between American and foreign automobiles, but now the line between them is a bit blurry with most vehicles being partially manufactured overseas and assembled here in the US, regardless of the automaker. Another example of the globalization of the auto industry would be the acquisition of Chrysler, a traditionally-American automaker, by Fiat, a traditionally-Italian automaker in 2014.

Scion was headquartered in Torrance, California, and operated between 2013 and 2016. They created a simple lineup of sedans and hatchbacks that were affordable and stylish, and therefore appealing to a younger customer. One of their more recognized models is the Scion xB, a boxy vehicle that was probably in direct competition with the Nissan Cube. Although Scion models are no longer produced, the Scion subsidiary was one of the steps that Toyota has taken over the years to become the word’s largest automaker.
