Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is a Japanese automaker that was formally part of the Mitsubishi Group. The Mitsubishi Group was a collection of different businesses in Japan that made much more than just automobiles. While each sub company is now their own entity they continue to share Mitsubishi brands and trademarks.

In 1971 Mitsubishi Motors sold a 15% share to Chrysler and started selling automobiles in the United States under the marks of Dodge and Plymouth. In 1982 the Mitsubishi brand was introduced to the United States for the first time. In 1986 Chrysler and Mitsubishi started a 50/50 venture called Diamond-Star Motors (a reference to their logo), and they were headquartered in Illinois. Over about a decade and a half, partially due to disagreements and competition, and partially due to their own financial struggles, Chrysler sold their shares to Mitsubishi. In 1991, Chrysler had only 3% equity, though Mitsubishi and Chrysler continued to share components and manufacturing on a contractual basis.
