Swallow Sidecar company was founded in 1922 by two friends William Lyons and William Walmsley. Both were motorcycle fanatics and the company started by manufacturing motorcycle sidecars and automobile bodies. In 1934 Walmsley sold his shares to Lyons, who then changed the company to S.S Cars Limited. In 1935 S.S Cars Limited built their first model SS, a 2 ½ -litre sports sedan which was named SS Jaguar 100. In 1945 S.S Cars shareholders decided to simply change the company name to Jaguar Cars Limited.

In 1950 Jaguar’s sales skyrocketed and they had a hard time keeping up. So they made some partnerships, one of them was British Motor Corporation with whom they merged in 1966. After the merger, the company was renamed British Motor Holdings. They in turn merged with Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968 and became British Leyland in 1975. Jaguar was spun off from British Leyland and was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1984. It was acquired by Ford in 1990.

In the early 2000s, Ford struggled financially and started selling some of their brands. They sold both Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors Ltd. of India in 2008. In January 2013 the two subdivisions were merged to form Jaguar Land Rover Limited and the parent company was renamed to Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC.
