Isuzu is one of the oldest Japanese automaker companies that is still in operation, and it is currently a brand known for its tough pick-up trucks and diesel engines used commercially. They started in 1916, when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. initiated plans for automobile production.
In 1971 Isuzu partnered with General Motors. This marked the beginning of Isuzu’s full-scale overseas strategy. Created in 1981, the American Isuzu Motors division was responsible for the marketing and distribution of Isuzu vehicles in the United States. The very first Isuzu truck arrived at the Port of Jacksonville, Florida on November 10, 1984.
Due to lack of sales, American Isuzu motors discontinued the distribution of passenger vehicles in early 2009. At that time their long-time partner General Motors was also heading towards bankruptcy, which was a contributing factor. Isuzu now focuses on its commercial trucks and fleet vehicles.
