Extended Car Warranty Explained

There are actually multiple different car warranties that might be available when you purchase a part or an entire vehicle. This page is intended to explain that Crawford’s Auto Repair will accept Extended Car Warranty payments for covered repairs and maintenance, but in this section we’ll explain the difference, which will help highlight that we do not try to charge you for repairs that are covered by dealer warranties (we’ll send you back to the dealer for those so you don’t get overcharged).

Here are the various car warranty programs:

• Manufacturer’s Warranty or Factory Warranty (for new cars or parts) – This is the standard warranty that comes with a new car and it’s generally included with the price of the vehicle. It could be a bumper-to-bumper warranty or a warranty for a specific system (powertrain or emissions warranty) or condition (rust warranty). If you purchased a new vehicle that comes with a warranty, and that warranty covers a specific repair, then you’d return to the dealer to for that repair. For all other repairs you can come to Crawford’s Auto Repair for affordable 5-star service. If you purchased a new part that is covered by warranty then you’d generally return to the shop who originally installed the part. That even includes us if we installed the part, since our parts are also covered by warranty.

• Dealer Warranty For Used Cars – This is a warranty offered by the dealer. An “implied” or “limited” warranty is generally implied for used car sales, which might be for 30 days or 1,000 miles. In some cases this is a legal requirement. Basically a limited warranty means you can drive the car off the lot, but they won’t help much if you’ve driven it longer than 30 days or whatever they specified when you bought it. Yet, dealers can also have extended warranties, or service plan warranties, which are often backed by the manufacturer. If you have a dealership extended warranty then you’d return to the dealer to have repairs done that are covered by that warranty. • Extended Car Warranty by Third Parties – Sometimes a dealer will sell a third party extended car warranty that is wrapped into the sale of the vehicle or if you purchase a used vehicle from an owner you can also purchased an extended car warranty on your own separately. This is very similar to a home warranty that you can purchase to cover parts of your home which are not covered by home insurance.
