Dashboard Warning Lights Can Indicate The Need For Repairs

A dashboard warning light could indicate the need for a wide range of services. Dashboard indicator lights can indicate extreme emergencies or they can simply indicate that a system is working. We’ve created a guide that includes the lights which mean “pull over now”, “not an emergency but urgent”, “regular maintenance is due”, and “a technician doesn’t fix it but the driver/owner should”.

Additional indicator lights are also just that, indicators. If a light is green or blue, it’s just illuminated to reassure you that something is working (i.e. it’s turned on), or it could assist you while driving. Most blue and green indicator lights were not included in the guide, but the lights for your specific vehicle will be in your owner’s manual.

Also, the “red means stop” rule doesn’t always apply to indicator lights. The same light can be red, orange or yellow and have the same severity. It’s more important to memorize the 3-6 for your vehicle that mean “pull over now” so that you know what to do if it happens while driving. For all others you have some time to drive the vehicle to the repair shop. When a vehicle is brought to the shop with a warning light illuminated then further investigation is needed and possibly repairs.
