Dodge is a division of Fiat Chrysler. They were originally founded as the Dodge Brothers in the early 1900s and acquired by Chrysler in 1928. Chrysler was acquired by Fiat as a result of the recession and related housing crash in 2008-2010. Prior to this time Dodge produced trucks with the RAM as their most prominent model. They had a surge in the market after a new, yet classy design became trendy in the 1990s. Since the Fiat acquisition, Dodge is now a separate entity from RAM trucks.
Fiat acquiring Chrysler could be thought of as a capstone to the globalization of the automotive industry. While Chrysler was one of the “Big Three” traditionally-American auto manufacturers, they are now Italian-owned. Dodge produces and sells vehicles worldwide, but they can still be considered American since there are factories here in the United States and they are headquartered in Michigan.
